Google wants active review management. Here’s what that actually means.

What the official Google guidance says about responding to reviews, visibility, and the limits of what a review management platform can promise.

Your Google Business Profile is often one of the first places a potential customer encounters your business. Reviews help people assess whether the experiences other customers describe are relevant to what they need.

Google lets authorized business owners respond publicly.

Google Business Profile allows owners and authorized managers of eligible, verified profiles to read and respond to customer reviews. Those responses are displayed publicly with the reviews. Businesses can edit or remove their own response, subject to Google's moderation and platform rules. A connected third-party tool must also have the appropriate API access and permission from the person managing the profile.

This is why REVIEWZ asks for Google Business Profile authorization. That connection is used to retrieve locations and available review content, prepare a draft, and submit the exact approved reply through Google's supported interface. It does not give REVIEWZ control over what a reviewer writes or which reviews Google chooses to display.

A review response is a customer-service signal.

If a guest says the guide was exceptionally helpful, a short reply can recognize that person. If a customer says food quality was disappointing, a useful reply acknowledges the criticism without inventing internal fixes or promising compensation. A future customer will be able to see that tone and decide what it means to them.

89%of respondents in BrightLocal's 2026 survey expect business owners to respond to reviews.

Do not overclaim what responses can do for rankings.

Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews, positive ratings and the amount of review activity can contribute to how prominent a business appears; there is no basis for claiming that one particular reply will guarantee a higher position or an immediate change to a rating.

Google's guidance encourages businesses to respond to reviews, but a response strategy should first be judged by its accuracy, usefulness and effect on customer trust—not by invented SEO promises.

Practical Google review-management checklist.

  • Confirm the business location is eligible and correctly connected.
  • Review new Google feedback regularly, including mixed and negative experiences.
  • Personalize responses with factual references to the customer's comments.
  • Route sensitive complaints to the right teammate for approval.
  • Monitor repeated issues in your Insights instead of treating each complaint in isolation.
